The Costa Dorada is the coastal area located in the northernmost part of southern Catalonia. The capital is Tarragona and its area of influence is divided into six comarques (counties) and 131 municipalities.
It has a surface area of 2,999 km2 and, together with the districts of Lérida, Gerona and Barcelona, forms Catalonia. It is bordered to the north by France, beyond the Pyrenees, to the south by the Valencian Country and to the west by Aragon, one of the 17 autonomous communities of Spain, and to the south by western Europe.
Its privileged location allows it to have a very varied territory, ranging from the mountains to the coast, bathed by the Mediterranean Sea. It is made up of the counties of Alt Camp, Baix Camp, Conca de Barberà, Priorat, Tarragonès and Baix Penedès.
The entire Costa Dorada enjoys a typically Mediterranean climate, with mild temperatures in winter and warm summers with little rainfall. In winter, the mestral or "cierzo" wind blows from the north-west and the "garbí" from the south-west, and in summer there is a low degree of humidity that keeps the fog away.
